The smile is more than just the simple movement of the facial muscles. The action can make or break a job interview and even affect how others perceive a person. These are only some of the reasons why people nowadays are putting effort into their smiles. Fortunately, the advances in dentistry made way for better materials, techniques, and services that can help patients achieve what they are aiming for.

For example, dental veneers. This prosthesis can help a person correct several smile flaws that supposedly need several treatments. Due to this, many people are availing of the said smile enhancer. But has anyone ever stopped and wondered how dental veneers started? Let us at New Dental Images satisfy that curiosity! Here is how it all began with dental veneers.

Dental Veneers

History of Veneers

Dr. Charles Pincus, a Californian dentist, came up with a solution for his clients in Hollywood. In the late 1920s, Pincus introduced a prosthetic that can be bonded on an actor’s teeth during shoots. When placed, it served as an instant enhancement that made their smile more pleasant. The said prosthesis was made of acrylic, and a removable adhesive was used to keep them temporarily in place.

Between the 1920s and 1950s, more people and not just celebrities were availing of dental veneers since it was a time when people were suffering from teeth problems. Although newer materials like porcelain and composite were used, the issue of the adhesive to use remained. Fortunately, a dentist named Dr. Michael Bunocore discovered that slightly etching the enamel using a mildly acidic solution made it a good surface for sealants and restorations.

Two more minds contributed to the discovery of dental veneers. It was J.R. Calamia and R.J. Simonsen who combined the ideas of Pincus and Buonocore. The result? A bonding surface perfect for the permanent attachment of porcelain to the teeth was known. As technology continued to advance, the technique for dental veneers was modernized. Due to this, the prosthesis became more affordable and accessible to many.

At New Dental Images, our patients can take advantage of veneers made from porcelain that offers better aesthetics and stain-resistance. For a more conservative approach, Lumineers that requires little to no enamel removal can also be taken advantage of.
