What is a dental implant?

Dental implants take the place of the root of the tooth and are secured directly into the jawbone. They actually fuse with the bone just like a real root does.

After the implant is in place, some type of tooth form, or abutment, which replaces the missing tooth, is then attached to the implant. The abutment is really just a false tooth. It may be a crown, dentures or bridgework. Once the abutment is in place, it is permanent.

What is involved?

There is preparation involved. You will need to have pre-implant X-rays. Then, impressions will be made. You need to provide your dentist with your medical history to be certain you are a good candidate for implants.

At New Dental Images in Sacramento and Elk Grove, we will work with you to develop a specific treatment plan. How long it takes and what is involved depends on several factors, such as:

  • How many teeth need to be replaced.
  • Whether you will need any pre-implant work such as periodontal treatment or bone surgery.

Pre-implant procedures may take several weeks. When all pre-implant dental work has been performed, the actual implant process can usually be done in one day. On the day designated for your implant surgery, you walk into the dental office with missing teeth and walk out with your replacement teeth.

How do I take care of the implants?

Dental implants look and function like ordinary teeth. They feel like ordinary teeth and there are no dietary limitations. You can chew normally. They have to be flossed and brushed just like real teeth.

You need to have routine dental check-ups and periodic professional cleanings for your implants the same as you need for regular teeth. Unlike real teeth, they do not decay.

What are the benefits of having dental implants?

Since the implant is affixed permanently to the bone, there is no slipping or clicking as sometimes happens with dentures. They are cared for like normal teeth, unlike dentures that have to be removed to be cleaned and brushed. They generally do not have to be replaced. Dentures need to be replaced approximately every five years.
